The directional characteristic of the MK21 lies between the omnidirectional MK2 and the cardioid MK4. The idea of combining the advantages of the cardioid and the omnidirectional characteristic was the basis for its development. In contrast to omnidirectional microphones, which tend to have a higher directivity at higher frequencies, and to small cardioid microphones, which tend to accentuate the high frequencies of laterally incident sound, the frequency has little influence on the polar pattern of the MK21 and thus on its directivity index. This means that laterally radiating sources and reverberated sound will be transmitted with the same slight alteration of the sound colour. The angle of incidence of sound is therefore not a critical factor for this type of microphone /infracardioiddirectivity particularly independent of frequency/pleasant sound image, often described as "warm"/recommended use: spot mic and main stereo mic
While the MK21 can legitimately be used as a center channel mic for MS stereo recordings, it is excluded for XY stereo due to its poor directivity./The MK21 is an excellent choice as a spot mic on instruments such as the piano and on instrument groups such as string stands./It is also used extensively in stereo pairs, where its low-frequency response is highly appreciated. /The MK21 Infracardioid is one of the preferred capsule types, along with the MK4 Cardioid and MK41 Supercardioid. /Bandwidth: 30 Hz - 20 kHz/Sensitivity: 13 mV/Pa/Equivalent Acoustic Background Noise Level (A-weighted): 14 dB-A/Equivalent Acoustic Background Noise Level (CCIR): 24 dB/Signal-to-Noise Level (A-weighted): 80 dB-A/Maximum Sound Pressure Level at 0.5% THD: 132 dB-SPL/Length: 22 mm/Diameter: 20 mm/Weight: 17 g/Surface Finish: anti-reflective grey (g) or nickel (ni)
